Why did you become a writer?
Well...the ballerina thing didn't exactly work out. At age five, I discovered I had exactly zero talent, grace or coordination. (Heartbreaking!) So what else could I do?
No really, why did you become a writer?
Okay. Seriously. I love telling stories. I always have. And to be honest, it's the only thing I'm good at. (Let's just say, math is not my friend.)
What inspired Singletini?
I started writing Singletini the summer NINE of my good friends got engaged. (I freaked out!) Was I being left behind? Was I weird? Why wasn't I ready to race to the altar too? I was convinced something was wrong with me. After hours of discussing my dilemma with anyone who'd listen, I decided to write a book about it. I wanted to explore what it was like to be twentysomething and not looking for marriage...not yet anyway.
I felt like there were tons of girls experiencing the same thing. A little lost, a little confused and more than a little bombarded with the wedding craze. It's not that these girls didn't want to find love and get married, they just couldn't quite let go of their carefree college lifestyle when it was all about fun and friends (not fiancés!). It was scary to watch friends dive into adulthood as you were left standing on the other side as...well...a singletini. That's how Singletini was born. I wanted to write a book that celebrated growing up, being single (with all its wild hookups and martini hangovers) and all the quirky things we do to find our one and only.
How did you come up with the wingwoman idea?
To be perfectly honest, I didn't. My agent Jenny Bent mentioned the concept after reading an article in The New York Times. I loved the idea! It made perfect sense to have the star character take a wild job finding love for everyone but her single self. The new wingwoman job highlighted just how far people will go on their search for a soulmate.
How much of Singletini is true?
Can I plead the fifth? Just kidding. Bits and pieces are inspired by my friends (after all, NINE of them got engaged at the same time! Can you imagine?), but for the most part it's purely fictional. I've never been a wingwoman. I've never met a bride so evil. And my tush has never appeared in a magazine...as far as I know.
Are you like the main character Victoria Hart?
Maybe a tiny bit. I am obsessed with crow's feet. I never want to grow up. And I did freak out when my first friend got engaged. (Okay. Fine. I freaked out when all of them got engaged!). But mostly, Victoria Hart is her own bubbly and clueless character who gets into more trouble than I could ever find.
Are you working on another novel?
Yes. It's also set in Chicago. That's all I can say about it for now though. Stay tuned... |
